The Purpose of this Page…from Standards, Stories, and the Space in Between
When most people think about training manuals, they picture binders full of procedures, checklists, and diagrams. Manuals are essential. They give us structure, consistency, and a shared language. But anyone who has ever worked in the field knows that the real lessons often live outside the pages. They’re found in the conversations between colleagues, the improvisations during a crisis, and the reflections that come after the sirens fade.
This site, From the Margins of the Manual, is about those lessons. It’s about the space where standards meet stories, where protocols intersect with human experience, and where training becomes more than a requirement…it becomes a lifeline.
Why Create a Site?
I’ve spent more than two decades immersed in the world of first responder training, credentialing, and standards. My career has taken me from enlisted and civilian service in the United States Coast Guard to leadership roles with state law enforcement, and now to directing NASBLA’s Boat Operations and Training Program. Along the way, I’ve seen firsthand how training shapes readiness – not just in theory, but in practice.
What I’ve learned is simple: manuals matter, but people matter more. Standards give us a foundation, but it’s the stories, the lived experiences, and the reflections that bring those standards to life. This site is my attempt to capture that intersection.
What You’ll Find Here
This space isn’t just about policy or pedagogy. It’s about exploring the evolving landscape of first responder training through multiple lenses:
- Stories from the field – Dispatches, anecdotes, and reflections that highlight the human side of readiness.
- Insights on standards – How credentialing systems and training frameworks are built, why they matter, and where they fall short.
- Reflections on leadership – Lessons learned from working across state, national, and international levels, and from supporting the frontline efforts of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Questions worth asking – Because training isn’t static. It evolves, and so should the way we think about it.
My goal isn’t to provide all the answers. It’s to spark conversations, challenge assumptions, and invite others to reflect on what training really means in practice.
The Margins Matter
The title of this site, From the Margins of the Manual, comes from a simple idea. Manuals are written to capture what we know, but the margins are where we scribble notes, underline what matters, and add reminders from experience. The margins are personal. They’re where the official meets the practical.
In my own career, I’ve found that the margins often hold the most valuable lessons. They remind us that training isn’t just about compliance…it’s about preparation, resilience, and adaptability. They remind us that behind every protocol is a person, and behind every standard is a story.
A Personal Note
When I pursued my PhD, my research focused on how training methodologies impact performance and readiness, particularly within specialized jurisdictions. That academic journey reinforced what I had already seen in practice: training is not one-size-fits-all. It must be tailored, tested, and constantly refined.
But beyond the research and the credentials, my passion lies in the people. I’ve seen the difference that effective training makes – not just in outcomes, but in confidence, trust, and teamwork. And I’ve seen the risks when training falls short.
This site is my way of continuing that work outside the classroom and beyond the manual. It’s a place to share what I’ve learned, what I’m still learning, and what I believe we can do better.
Looking Ahead
As this page unfolds, I’ll be writing about:
- The challenges of standardizing training across diverse jurisdictions.
- The balance between theory and practice in credentialing systems.
- The role of leadership in shaping readiness.
- The stories that remind us why training matters in the first place.
Some posts will be analytical, others more reflective. Some will dive into technical details, while others will simply share a story from the margins. Together, I hope they’ll paint a fuller picture of what it means to prepare people for unpredictable work.
An Invitation
Training is not a solitary pursuit. It’s built on collaboration, shared experience, and collective wisdom. My hope is that this site becomes more than just my reflections, but that it becomes a space for dialogue.
So I invite you to join me. Read, reflect, and share your own stories. Whether you’re a first responder, a trainer, a policymaker, or simply someone interested in how we prepare people for critical roles, your perspective matters.
Together, we can explore the margins of the manual…the space where standards meet stories, and where readiness becomes real.
Thank you for being here. This is just the beginning.
